About The Project
The Crocker Art Museum, a venerable institution listed on the National Register of Historic Places, embarked on an expansion project aimed at significantly enhancing its facilities. The addition not only modernized the museum but also expanded it to accommodate new galleries, teaching areas, four studios, a venue for student and community exhibitions, an expanded Gerald Hansen Library, the Art Education Resource Room, and Tot Land.
MTWgroup was tasked with providing a landscape design that seamlessly integrated with the historic character of the Victorian building while addressing the evolving needs of the museum. The design focused on creating expansive outdoor gathering spaces that would support both informal meetings and scheduled events, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.
A key consideration in the design was ensuring ADA compliance and enhancing walkability throughout the newly expanded areas. This was achieved by thoughtfully integrating accessible pathways and features, ensuring that the expanded museum would be welcoming and navigable for all visitors.
The landscape design was meticulously crafted to respect and complement the existing outdoor sculptures on the site. MTWgroup’s approach preserved the integrity of these iconic works while integrating new elements that harmonized with the historic surroundings.
In this project, MTWgroup demonstrated expertise in balancing the needs of a modern expansion with the preservation of historical significance, resulting in a landscape design that enriches the museum experience and supports its expanded role in the community.
