About The Project
MTWgroup created the landscape architecture for the newly designed science center, a project that presented an array of design opportunities and challenges. The landscape design was crafted not only to support the functionality of the new building but also to enhance the overall campus experience.
A significant aspect of the project was the integration of walkways designed to improve student flow throughout the campus. MTWgroup designed new elements including a central plaza, a welcoming entry area, and a garden that functions as an outdoor biology classroom. The walkways are seamlessly incorporated into the existing campus layout, creating smooth transitions between the old and new structures.
Special attention was given to preserving heritage trees on site. MTWgroup’s design direction ensured that safe grading practices were implemented around these trees, and the irrigation design was carefully planned to minimize impact on the root structures both during and after construction.
The pavement design was another crucial component, as it needed to accommodate a fire lane around the new building while enhancing the pedestrian experience. MTWgroup's design effectively guides students and visitors toward the existing administration office. The pavement’s score patterns are harmoniously integrated with the previous phase of work, which include the small gym and cafeteria, ensuring a cohesive aesthetic throughout the campus.
Additionally, a landscape buffer with mounding and seat walls was created to offer a comfortable and inviting space for pick-up and drop-off. Through meticulous planning and thoughtful design, MTWgroup successfully blended functionality with visual appeal, enriching the campus environment and supporting the educational mission of the new science center.
