Scott Leaman Elementary School

Western Placer Unified School District
Lincoln, CA

About The Project

The new Scott Leaman Elementary School was constructed to address the local population increase, the pressing need for additional educational facilities to accommodate more students, and to provide a high-quality learning environment. The new school was designed to support the district's commitment to educational excellence, enhance student experiences, and integrate seamlessly with the surrounding natural landscape.

This project is situated adjacent to the Brentford Nature Reserve Trail and presented MTWgroup with a dynamic array of site and landscape considerations. The undulating subgrade of the site initially posed drainage challenges, particularly affecting areas designated for planting. Collaborating closely with the contractor, MTWgroup expertly addressed these drainage issues. Detailed test holes were excavated for each tree well to assess and improve drainage capabilities. Where necessary, a multipronged approach was implemented to facilitate proper drainage, ensuring the long-term health and growth of the trees.

The design for Scott Leaman Elementary School encompasses a range of outdoor areas intended to enhance the educational experience. Learning areas nestled between buildings, a small-scale amphitheater, and a teaching garden were integrated into the site plan, providing both functional and interactive spaces for students.

Balancing turf with natural landscape zones was crucial to meet state water use guidelines while maintaining aesthetic and practical value. MTWgroup also partnered with the school district to select plant materials that aligned with maintenance goals, bolstered site security, and contributed positively to the surrounding residential community. Through thoughtful design and expert execution, the project achieves a harmonious blend of functionality, environmental stewardship, and visual appeal.
