Japanese Tea Garden
California State University
Sacramento, CA
About The Project
California State University, Sacramento embarked on a journey to deepen its Japanese culture curriculum with the addition of an authentic Japanese Tea Garden. To bring this vision to life, MTWgroup was entrusted with the design, working closely with facilities department to ensure every detail reflected authentic Japanese traditions.
The challenge to transform a sunken area of the campus into a tranquil oasis was underway. MTWgroup’s design elevated the garden to meet the surrounding landscape, making it both accessible and harmonious with the university grounds. Central to the garden’s charm is the Torii Gate, a traditional symbol that welcomed visitors into this serene space. Flagstone stepping stones meander through the garden, guiding visitors along a path of contemplation and calm.
Adding to the garden’s authenticity are the natural log posts and beams, which form a rustic yet refined retaining wall, echoing the traditional craftsmanship of Japanese gardens. Each element was thoughtfully chosen to create a setting that not only honors cultural heritage but also provided a peaceful retreat for students and faculty alike.
MTWgroup’s design did more than just beautify the campus; it wove together cultural significance with practical functionality, crafting a space that supports the university’s educational goals and offers a sanctuary for reflection and learning.
