About The Project

The Department of Justice facility needed to adapt to a new state of California mandate prohibiting irrigation for public building lawns. The landscape renovation of the 4.5-acre office complex presented MTWgroup with a unique set of challenges and opportunities, which the team addressed with innovative and sustainable design solutions.

A key element was the renovation of a one-mile grass beltway around the facility’s expansive perimeter. To comply with the mandate to conserve water, MTWgroup designed a meandering walking path to enhance health and well-being for employees and the public. Rock gardens with drought-tolerant succulents paired with California-native plants create a rhythm throughout the walking path and enhance aesthetic appeal. The landscape plan was crafted with an emphasis on low maintenance requirements, ensuring long-term sustainability and ease of care.

The project was executed in three phases. Phase I focused on upgrading the north and south entrances of the building, incorporating spiraling rock garden features to add visual interest and complement the drought-tolerant theme. Phases II and III were carried out concurrently and involved the development of the perimeter walkway, completing the beltway with cohesive and functional design elements.
