About The Project
Sacramento State University sought to enhance pedestrian safety and connectivity between the campus and nearby student housing. MTWgroup was engaged to develop a comprehensive streetscape design that would facilitate this vital link. In collaboration with the client, MTWgroup explored various design options that celebrated the local community and regional character.
The project included the installation of a new underpass, which navigated beneath an existing light rail line and freeway. This challenging infrastructure required a significant retaining wall, which was creatively designed with a large, embedded graphic of a mountain to add visual interest and integrate with the regional context. The incorporation of landscaping and advanced irrigation controller systems was also central to this approach, ensuring both functionality
and sustainability.
The final design drew inspiration from the surrounding mountains, reflecting a thoughtful integration of the natural landscape with the urban infrastructure, and providing a visually engaging, safe and functional pathway for students and visitors alike.
